Brigid Alverson in Wired Magazine
I’m an avid reader of both Wired Magazine and manga blogger Brigid Alverson, so consider my delight when I was flipping through the latest issue of Wired and found Brigid’s name. She is in the Letters section on page 25 and is quoted on her thoughts of Wired’s cover story on manga. Her quote is actually an excerpt from digitalstrips.com, and is complimentary of the story but not so much of Wired’s web presentation of the manga story they commissioned.
By the by, Brigid contributed to the first print issue of Comic Foundry and meeting her at the NY Anime Festival was one of the best parts of the show. Outside of those crazy cosplay kids, of course.

2008 Diamond Retailer Summits Announced
Today Diamond Comics Distributors announced their 2008 Retailer Summits would be in Las Vegas, Nevada and Ft. Wayne, Indiana. The 2007 summits were Ft. Wayne and part of the Baltimore Comic Con. The summits serve as a state of the union for comics retailers and have become common place for big announcements, such as the unveiling of Diamond’s new point-of-sale system. It will be interesting to see how the affects the attendance of next year’s Baltimore con, which has been gaining steam the past few years.

“We’re excited about returning to Las Vegas for the first of this year’s Retailer Summits,” said Senior Marketing Manager – Trade Shows Phyllis Opolko. “Our last Summit in Vegas (in 2003) provided West Coast specialty storeowners a golden opportunity to attend the event, and we’re pleased to be coming back to Vegas in 2008. And, of course, we’ll also be back in Ft.Wayne as well, giving retailers the option of attending that conveniently located Summit, which will once again host The Alliance Open House.”

Marvel Solicits: Moby Dick
Anyone else find it funny that the cover to Moby Dick #2 is a crotch shot?

Batman/Superman Billboard in I AM LEGEND
In the opening minutes of the massive hit I Am Legend, Will Smith is hunting deer in a deserted Times Square. As the camera pans through the desolate city, there’s a giant billboard for a movie coming out in 2010 — Batman Vs. Superman.
Apparently it’s a little in-joke for Legend script writer Akiva Goldsman, who was once attached to the Batman Vs. Superman project that was killed a few years back.

Change Your Tivo…LOST Moves
According to TV.com, the first episode of the new season of LOST will premiere on Jan. 31, about a week earlier than previously advertised. Also, it’ll be moving from Wednesdays at 10 to Thursdays at 9.
I remember remarking to CB Cebulski at a Millarworld meetup a few years ago that people couldn’t have comic-themed events on Wednesdays because everyone would be at home watching LOST (like they were that evening, save for the Tivo-savvy). No more! Party on Wednesdays.1

Comic Foundry at the New York Anime Festival
This past weekend Comic Foundry braved the cold and our incomplete knowledge about manga to journey to the New York Anime Festival. To sum up the show in a single word: Fun.
Everyone was having so much fun. The vendors. The attendees. The media. The goth lolita brides. Everyone. The average attendee age was much lower than I was used to seeing. Out with the old curmudgeons, in with the hyperactive teens running around. Literally. You know when you were in high school and you got to go on an out-of-town field trip for Model UN or for band or some other club (what up, high school Journalism Education Association)? And there were no parents and you’re around all these other people with the same interests and you just cut loose? That is what it was like. Kids just enjoying what they love. Very refreshing to see.
Also, the cosplay was much stronger here than at general comics shows. Usually you see a few costumes here or there, but you could not turn your head without seeing someone dressed up. Yes, I realize it was part of the Cosplay World Summit, but still, the participation was much stronger. It was a bit unexpected to see people cosplay as yaoi characters though. And no, to the person that asked: I was not dressed up as the guy from that anime who grew claws and ripped his own face off. Sorry.
Another great part? The food. This convention had the best in-con food selection that I’ve seen. I can still smell those waffles.
In short, the convention made me wish I read more manga. Which is why I stocked up on a bag full of reading material while I was there at an aptly titled booth called, Cheap Manga (as in price, not quality. Though I’m yet to read the books so we’ll see…)

Dean Haspiel and Molly Crabapple give sex advice
Over at Nerve.com, Brooklyn comicsters Dean Haspiel and Molly Crabapple give sex advice in an aptly titled series, Sex Advice from Brooklynites. Haspiel and Crabapple are part of the web comic group ACT-I-VATE. Though, I have to object to one of Crabapple’s answers:
I’m a Midwest boy who wants to impress a Brooklyn gal. What should I do?
Be yourself — a lot of New Yorkers have a redneck fantasy.Redneck!?! C’mon, as a Missouri native I have to take offense.
