Kristen Bell on the cover of Complex Magazine, part 2
Kristen Bell is actually on two different covers of Complex. Variant cover what? Don’t worry, it’s not foil-embossed or anything.

Kristen Bell on the cover of Complex Magazine (and I helped)
I think most of you know that my full-time job is at Complex Magazine. Some days I love my job and some days I really love my job. Last month was the latter, as I helped art direct a cover shoot with Heroes star Kristen Bell and also wrote the cover story. Look for the issue in a few weeks, but Complex.com just put up some previews:

Issue 2 Solicitations Sent!
This week I sent off the solicitations to Diamond for issue 2 of Comic Foundry Magazine! It’ll be in January Previews (unless we mysteriously get rejected again — which i seriously doubt would happen) and in stores in March. I am super-psyched for our first “real” issue. Our first issue, which I love, was a real test for us to see how it would sell, how it would turn out and if it would financially viable for us to continue doing. Well now the test is over as we’re moving on at Warp 9. We figured out what worked and what didn’t and made the appropriate changes. Next year we’re going quarterly and we’re going FULL-COLOR!
Get ready…

Marjane Satrapi’s animated adaptation of her hit book, Persepolis, has been winning awards at film festivals at a rapid rate (as noted in the trailer). Now, for the first time, we can see what the festivals have been seeing as the trailer is finally up. Check it!

Marvel Upgrades Site Content, But Not Site Itself
Everyone is reporting the nifty news that Marvel.com is now putting digital copies of their comics online (for a fee), and currently have 250 issues you can test drive for free. From the looks of the Marvel site all this news is generating a bit more traffic than they can handle at the moment. Hopefully it clears up later in the day…

Comic Artists at American Illustration + Photography Party

James Jean drawing on the sketch wall at the Bernstein & Andriulli after party at the Fuse galleryLast night was the annual American Illustration and American Photography party and it was just as fun as years past. Food, booze, dancing, networking, not to mention two walls filled with award-winning photographs and illustrations (two of which I art-directed, thank you very much). There were also several comic artists there — those rare few who make the crossover between editorial illustrator and comic artist — including James Jean, Koren Shadmi, Nathan Fox and Ward Sutton.

James mentioned a few interesting tidbits:
1) That as much as he loves it, issue 6 will be his last cover of Gerard Way’s Umbrella Academy comic.
2) He just did a mural for the Prada store in Soho. Watch out Paul Pope and your Diesel prints! You’re not the only comic artist that can do clothing stores.
