New York Comic Con Tries Clever PR/Advertising

Late this afternoon Peter Tatara of the NYCC posted on the NYCC blog that the parent site, newyorkcomiccon.com had been hacked by someone with a butterfly fetish. Turns out it’s The Monarch from the fantasticly awesome show The Venture Bros. I like that they’re reaching out and trying some clever advertising. (The Venture Bros returns for season 3 in June, hint). Though, attempting a “stunt” at 4 PM on a Friday seems slightly ill-timed if you’re trying to cause a stir.PS - if you’re DYING to get a season preview of The Venture Bros you don’t need to wait until NYCC, just 2 weeks when the new issue of Comic Foundry Magazine hits stands.

I’m usually not one for posting hype stuff I’m sent, but I have a certain soft spot for extruded typography. That’s why I look forward to checking out the Sundays Anthology at MoCCA this weekend.

STEPHEN KING TO APPEAR AS GUEST OF HONOR AT NEW YORK COMIC CON TO CELEBRATE LAUNCH OF ORIGINAL MARVEL COMIC SERIES BASED ON HIS EPIC THE DARK TOWER
NEW YORK – World Fantasy Award-winning writer Stephen King, long acknowledged as the master of modern horror, will appear as a Guest of Honor at New York Comic Con taking place February 23-25, 2007. King will join a special panel hosted by Joe Quesada, Editor In Chief of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. on Saturday, February 24, 2007 to discuss the ground-breaking new comic book series adapted from his magnum opus, The Dark Tower.
“We are absolutely ecstatic that Stephen King will be attending the February 2007 New York Comic Con,” said Ruwan Jayatilleke, Director of Development, Marvel Publishing. “His appearance will be a huge thrill for Dark Tower enthusiasts, comic book fans, and convention-goers alike. Marvel is extremely grateful for this opportunity—and aims to make this convention a landmark event for all of graphic fiction storytelling.”

The comics will work in conjunction with the novels, further supplementing and defining the saga’s mythology under the direction of the acclaimed author himself. The highly anticipated first issue will hit shelves on February 7, 2007.

MARVEL PR
AGENTS OF ATLAS INTERACTIVE SCAVENGER HUNT
Reintroducing the Atlas characters from the 1950’s in grand manner, Marvel is hosting an interactive scavenger hunt on the internet and in comic stores that allows fans to unlock parts of an exclusive online story leading up the six-issue limited-series Agents of Atlas.
And now, let the game begin…
Hello.
I speak for an organization known as The Atlas Foundation. We at Atlas feel that your “comic books” make an excellent recruiting venue for our global organization, and that Timely Comics (do not correct me- I do not acknowledge the recent name change) will serve a valuable role to that end.
I propose to honor our new arrangement by giving your readership a free story to read online– a serial adventure, if you will. Except ours is quite special as it details actual events from the year 1958. We shall meet on the inter-net to review this episodic narrative at a hidden location.
There is a common element relative to certain words in the list below. Once you know the three words that are connected, remove them. Unscramble the remaining anagram to guide you to your beginning inter-net destination.
HELPMATE MENACE FALSETTO VENUS ASTONISHING BOWLEG
I shall await your arrival…
It is believed this mysterious message has something to do with the fact that Marvel is publishing AGENTS OF ATLAS, a 6-issue limited series reuniting Marvel heroes from the late 1950s featuring Jimmy Woo, Venus, The Human Robot, Marvel Boy and Gorilla Man.
A game hint: Marvel.com is the fist stop on the hunt.

Alex Ross Painting Covers for Virgin Comics
A LEGEND FROM INDIA – NOW WITH COVER ART BY AN AMERICAN LEGEND
New York, NY, MAY 30 – Alex Ross, the acclaimed comic book illustrator is painting covers for Virgin Comics, it was announced today by Virgin Comics CEO, Sharad Devarajan. His first work for Virgin is the cover of Ramayan Reborn #1 (in stores September 6). Ramayan Reborn is loosely based on India’s greatest legend, Ramayana originally written in Sanskrit more than two thousand years ago.
“I have always respected and enjoyed the magic of Alex’s art,” said Devarajan. “His knowledge of classic characters and mythic elements provides unique perspective for Ramayan Reborn.”
Ramayan Reborn from Virgin Comics is a graphic, post-apocalyptical reinvention of Indian mythology told by India’s two greatest creators, bestselling author Deepak Chopra (Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Peace Is The Way) and acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth, Bandit Queen).
“I am thrilled to be contributing to the Virgin Comics library of titles,” said Deepak Chopra. “There are very few Western allegories with mythic storytelling, intrepid heroes and interwoven dimensions on this level. Homer’s Odyssey and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings come to mind.”
